The War between Antioxidants and Free Radicals Heats Up

Did you know your body is being bombarded by damaging particles 24 hours a day? Even some of the functions your body must perform for basic survival like digestion produce these damaging particles as a by-product. You have probably already heard of these particles, they are called “Free Radicals”. Free radicals are continuously being produced in the body and come from a variety of different sources including pollution, chemicals, alcohol, medications and strenuous exercise. If free radicals are allowed to run rampant in the body they can cause cellular damage paving the way to illness, disease and premature aging. The only defence the body has against free radicals is with Antioxidants. Antioxidants are vital for cell protection, as they help to neutralise free radicals.

Free radicals are unstable molecules, known as are unpaired electrons that ‘attack’ other healthy molecules in order to stabilise themselves. When they attack other healthy molecules, they steal an electron. This in turn causes the molecules that are attacked to become free radicals, and so on, thereby beginning a chain reaction that eventually causes cellular and tissue damage. Antioxidants help to stabilise these free radicals by ‘donating’ an electron ensuring the molecules are now paired and stabilised which help to end the chain reaction of cellular damage and prevent illness and disease.

The natural aging process and the progression of disease can occur at a faster rate due to excessive cellular damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals occur as a natural part of life. And, now we are exposed to far more free radicals than ever, due to our urban lifestyles. The good news is that the body does have, through our diet, chemicals that neutralize free radicals, these are called antioxidants. So antioxidants are vitally essential for preserving a well body ie. life itself. The body has the ability to neutralize these damaging free radicals with its supply of antioxidants and since we are now exposed to heaps MORE free radicals than ever before, we now need far MORE antioxidants in our diet than our ancestors. The fact remains that many people do not get enough antioxidants in their diet.

The richest source of these key nutrients, antioxidants, is in fresh fruit and vegetables. The best way to ensure you are getting enough antioxidants is to eat a wide range of different coloured fruits and vegetables. While this all sounds good in theory, in reality most people do not have a perfect diet and would often fall short in the fruit and vegetable department.

And, not all fruit and vegetables are equal in antioxidant content; in fact there are huge differences between many. For example 10grams of dried goji berries provides you with the equivalent antioxidant content of 1 cup of watermelon, 1 banana, half a cup of broccoli and 1 carrot combined! Imagine how much fruit and vegetables you would need to eat to get the antioxidants from an entire packet of dried goji berries. Morlife has incorporated antioxidant superfoods (like goji berries) into functional foods, so you are guaranteed an antioxidant boost when consuming these foods. Each product has been specially formulated to combine antioxidant rich nutrients with synergistic ingredients that boost the antioxidant content of these nutritious foods. Morlife has created a dynamic and delicious range of antioxidant rich functional foods to appeal to every taste.

What causes Free Radicals?

  • Pollution (car fumes, factory fumes)
  • Herbicides (from unwashed fruits and vegetables)
  • Synthetic chemicals (general household cleaners)
  • Cigarette smoke (including second hand smoke)
  • Alcohol
  • Medications
  • Radiation (X-rays, irradiated foods)
  • Illnesses and infections
  • Heavy metals
