Step 1 to Wellness – Alkalising
It is possible that osteoporosis, muscle aches, difficulty concentrating, lowered immunity and depression all have a common cause. One of them is a disorder of acid-base balance otherwise known as blood pH.
The body cannot move to wellness while it is bogged down with an unhealthy acidic diet full of processed foods, meat and sugar. When you consume a diet high in protein and sugars, acids can build up in the body and this acidity is commonly associated with disease. Moving to wellness requires ridding the body of this acid build up.
Alkalising simply puts the body in balance so it functions properly and operates optimally. The body was built to be healthy, energetic, vibrant and resilient; there is an “in built drive” in the body to get well. Given the right cellular conditions the cells already have the right programming to do what is necessary to get well.
To understand Alkalising we first need to understand pH, pH is a measure of how acidic a solution is- its value below 7 is acidic, above 7 – alkaline. Blood pH in a healthy individual is between 7.35 and 7.45, so the blood is a slightly alkaline pH.
The body’s pH is subject to small fluctuations due to the consumption of food and the effects of metabolic processes, which is significantly impacted by lifestyle or stress, drugs, physical activity. However, since even small deviations from the norm can cause serious disturbances in metabolic processes. The human body is equipped with an internal control system, which allows it to maintain blood pH at a constant level.
The body can remove acids via the lungs, kidneys and skin. Some acids can be converted into carbon dioxide, which is breathed out causing increased respiration. The kidneys also eliminate other types of acids, however the acids first need to be neutralised by amino acids or minerals, such as calcium. Finally, the skin also eliminates acids, although this is to a much smaller extent then the lungs and kidneys.
When free minerals are unavailable, the body will use mineral reserves (i.e. bones) in order to neutralize these acids. When alkaline minerals bind with acids, a neutral salt is made which can then enter the bloodstream for elimination without affecting the pH of the blood. Taking alkaline minerals on a regular basis may support the body’s efforts and greatly accelerate the process of de-acidification, and the restoration of pH balance.
As acids eliminated from the kidneys increases, more acid can move out of the blood, and in turn move from the tissues. Such an elimination process will enable the acids to move from deeper tissues until the body finally reaches a state of balance, slightly alkaline.
If acidification exceeds the capacity of the buffering system, the excess acid is stored in the connective tissue, where it is neutralized using contained calcium in the bones and glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), an important component of connective tissue – cartilage or tendons. The result of this process is called demineralization of the bone, or osteoporosis, as well as bone connective tissue diseases such as rheumatism.
Additionally, the mere status of acidification of the body affects the overall deterioration of its activities, including nervousness, reduced resistance to stress, difficulty concentrating, depression, lowered resistance and endurance of the body, nausea, exhaustion and overall lack of vitality.
The greatest causes of acidosis:
- High-protein products, and thus meat and fats, because in the course of their digestion produced acids: phosphoric acid and sulfuric acid
- Stress and fast pace of life
- Alcohol, nicotine, caffeine, leading to increased production of acid in the body
- Strenuous physical exercise, resulting in the production of lactic acid and then with the elimination of important minerals
- Slimming diets, which both lead to the release from adipose tissue fatty ketones, on the other hand are often poorly balanced (too little carbohydrates compared to proteins and fats)
Who should really pay attention?
As the dominant lifestyle “provides” our bodies plenty of acidifying substances, both taken with food, and manufactured by ourselves, the problem affects almost everyone. On the issue of acid-base balance, particular attention should be paid by the following persons:
- Consuming large quantities of meat
- Consuming a large amount of soft drinks and desserts high in sugars and fats
- Individuals with disorders such as diabetes, arthritis, rheumatism, heart disease (any disorder which is induced or worsened by acidosis)
- Under heavy physical or mental load (both stress and excessive physical activity leads to increased production of acid by the body)
- During weight loss (starvation produced ketone bodies)
- Over 50 years of age, when together with a decrease in renal function is reduced system capacity to buffer
Acid affects almost everyone whether you show signs or not; and so makes it important to increase your alkaline food intake either via a supplementary food or by diet or even better, both.
Alkalising Recipe Idea
Alkaline cabbage wraps
8 Cabbage Leaves
2 stalks Celery
1 cup Green Beans
½ cup Sprouts
½ Green capsicum
1 tsp Parsley (chopped)
3 tsp spring onion
2 cups Vegetable Broth
Flax seed oil
Scald cabbage leaves with boiling water & leave covered in pot for half an hour. Finely chop vegetables & add parsley. Mix well.
Spoon vegetable mixture onto each cooked cabbage leaf. Roll tight & tuck in ends. Use toothpicks to fasten.
Simmer in vegetable broth for 1 hour.
Season with Flax seed oil & cayenne pepper.
