Chlorella and Spirulina
Green superfoods are becoming increasingly popular for their ability to pack a powerful punch of nutrients into one, concentrated serving. Obtaining a wide variety of nutrients from natural food sources is the ideal way to ensure vitality and wellness, which is why superfoods like chlorella and spirulina are a great option for those wishing to boost their nutritional intake.
Chlorella is a nutrient-dense, green microalgae that contains virtually all the nutrients the human body needs for optimal health. Chlorella contains a wide variety of phytochemicals, in particular, it has a high chlorophyll content (7% of its total weight3), which is almost 5 to 10 times greater than any other known plant. Chlorophyll is thought to be the most important component of microalgae being exceptionally cleansing and alkalising while helping to assist in the removal of toxins from the body. Chlorella also contains an array of alkalising minerals, such as potassium, magnesium and calcium. What’s more, chlorella contains impressive amounts of naturally occurring antioxidants such as beta-carotene (provitamin A), vitamin C and vitamin E.
Another popular source of algae is spirulina. This potent, nutrient dense super food is derived from a single-celled, blue-green algae. Spirulina grows only in alkaline waters and is considered to be alkalising for the body. It has a high content of the alkalising green pigment, chlorophyll and also contains the alkalising minerals calcium, magnesium, potassium and zinc, which can help neutralise excess acids. For vegetarians, spirulina provides an excellent protein source, containing an average of 60-70% protein.
