Chlorella: an unsung hero

chlorellaChlorella is a nutrient rich single-celled green algae, found in fresh water, with virtually all the nutrients the human body needs for optimal health. Chlorella contains a wide variety of phytochemicals, in particular, it has a high chlorophyll content (7% of its total weight), which is almost 5 to 10 times greater than any other known plant.

Chlorophyll is thought to be the most important component of these microalgae as it is exceptionally cleansing, detoxification, alkalising and digestive function while helping to assist in the removal of toxins from the body. Chlorella also contains an array of alkalising minerals, such as potassium, magnesium and calcium and an impressive amount of naturally occurring antioxidants such as beta-carotene (provitamin A), vitamin C and vitamin E (Bewicke & Potter 1984).

Chlorella contains approximately 60% protein and possesses nineteen out of the 22 different amino acids, including all of the 8 essential amino acids. The protein content of Chlorella is almost three times that of beef when compared on a weight by weight basis (Bewicke & Potter 1984).

Current research interest in chlorella includes using it for boosting the immune system and for detoxification. Two clinical trials studying chlorella’s effects on patients with fibromyalgia have shown positive results. (Natural Standards 2013).  Chlorella has also long been used for its ability to detoxify and cleanse the body by binding to toxins and metals then shuffle them out of the body.

ChlorellaPowder1kg_ImageAs Chlorella has a fibrous cell wall, it can be difficult to digest and absorb the nutrients, so the best form of Chlorella is a cell broken, or cracked.  This means the cell wall has been cracked using a pressure differential method to allow maximal absorption of the nutrients chlorella possesses without affecting the nutrients inside the cell.

Recommended use: Mix 1 teaspoon of chlorella into water, juice, smoothie, salad dressing or other foods. Build up to 4 times daily. It is best to start with a low intake and gradually build up to the recommended amount to decrease any possible detoxification effects.
